CIP code change requests

The Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) provides a taxonomic scheme that supports the accurate tracking and reporting of fields of study and program completions activity. CIP was developed by the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics (NCES).

When a new program (PeopleSoft Academic Plan) is approved in the Coursedog, Academic Support Resources (ASR) matches the program to a CIP code based on Coursedog content. CIP codes are applied at the program level. A CIP Code will not vary for individuals within the same program.

Occasionally, a CIP code needs to be updated to reflect curricular changes affecting all students in the program. Academic department chairs or administrators may propose a CIP code change. Information collected on the CIP Code Change Request form includes:

  • Current CIP code (if possible)
  • Proposed new CIP code
  • Proposed effective term (must be a future term)
  • Rationale and justification for the change
    • Note: This usually includes citing course and program changes made in Coursedog
  • The faculty member approving the request

CIP code change requests are reviewed by ASR for approval. In some instances, prior approval of the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), our institutional accrediting body, is also needed.

Please note: CIP codes are not changed just to qualify a program for a  STEM designated CIP. Rather, there needs to be a change to curriculum or other documentation to show that a different code is a better fit. Students with questions about the STEM eligibility of their program should be referred to International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS).
